Ted Monroe?

On page 37 of the Ted Kerasote reading, he quotes Thoreau: "Dullness is but another name for tameness."

This quote reminds me a lot of an overused Marilyn Monroe quote: "Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring."

Kerasote is talking about the "wild" and how, once everything is tamed, it becomes dull. The "wilderness" will no longer be "wild". Monroe, on the other hand, is talking about humans. Humans, once tamed and no longer ridiculous, become boring/dull.

Maybe the insight gained from both of these quotes can tell us something. Maybe it is further proving the point that humans belong in the wilderness and thus, the two, are pretty much synonymous.

  1. I love how you related Marilyn Monroe to the class reading. I completely agree with you statement, "Humans, once tamed and no longer ridiculous, become boring/dull." It reminds me of the Spongebob Squarepants episode where Spongebob turns "normal" and assimilates into the typical business class. He acts boring and dull and Patrick no longer wants to hang out with him. Anyways, great job relating Thoreau to Monroe. And I realize this comment is all over the place...

  2. I didn't think about it that way, but I really like it because it is so true. A lot goes on with the world having crazy people, but would we really enjoy it if everyone was dull and tame? It's just like the wilderness. So many unexpected instances happen within them but it keeps us coming back for more. I like how you categorized them as synonymous.
